Are Vision Boards really helpful?

Story Time: I am currently working on remodeling my kitchen. As I put my plans together for the new kitchen I made a list of things that I liked about my current kitchen (e.g. trash compactor) and then things I wanted to add to my new kitchen (e.g. more storage). I thought about how my family and company use the space (e.g. everyone congregates at the island = bigger island). I thought about how I could use the space differently (e.g. extend the kitchen into the dining room since no one uses that space). I then started to look up kitchen ideas and save designs, color schemes, cabinet ideas and appliances that I liked. I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted the kitchen to look like but it wasn't until I started working with the kitchen designer who put everything together in a 3D image where I could really see the full picture come together. What I realized is that creating my kitchen was very much like creating a Vision Board.

Why Vision Boards work?

Vision Boards allow you to set your intentions. Setting your intentions clarifies what you want more of in your life and what you don't want. Intentions drive your energy - your energy drives your beliefs - your beliefs drive your words and ultimately your actions.

Putting together a simple Vision Board:

A process similar to the one I used with my kitchen remodel may work when it comes to building your Vision Board. Here are a few ideas of how you can start to build your Vision Board for this year.

  • Reflect on last year:

    • What went well?

    • What did you learn about yourself?

  • What do you want more of in your life?

  • What do you want less of in your life?

  • Think big:

    • What excites you about your future? Is there a stretch goal that scares you just a little bit? Write it down!

  • Think about all aspects of your life and what you want for yourself:

    • Health / Wellness

    • Friends / Family

    • Professional Life

    • Growth Opportunities

    • Spiritual Life

    • Travel / Experiences

Lastly, think about a word or phrase that summarizes your vision for next year. As we encounter challenges over the upcoming year, this word or phrase will act as a compass to steer you back on track!

Putting it all together

  • Find pictures that represent the essence of what you are envisioning for yourself and either create a physical board or a digital board.

  • Combine your words (using present tense) and pictures into something that will inspire you throughout the year.

  • Throughout the year feel free to refine / expand your Vision Board

The key is to place your Vision Board somewhere you can routinely see it and be inspired!

Wishing you an inspired year full of possibilities!
